The Nutritional Approach To Treating Autism

NutritionThere are important things to consider when changing anything in a child’s diet. It is common to worry about how much he or she eats, as opposed to the types of food they consume, and vice versa. It is important to remember that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders commonly have food allergy issues, and food rigidity can make mealtimes stressful on everyone. A medical test is the only steadfast way to determine whether your child suffers from food allergies; however, there are important clues that will enable you to tell if your child is at risk:

  • Loose/runny stools

  • Severe constipation

  • Eczema or Flushed Cheeks/Ears

  • Wheezing, runny nose or coughing

  • Swelling of the lips or eyes

  • Severe Tantrums associated with feeling sick

There are several different nutritional approaches to treating Autism. One of the most common is the Gluten Free Casein Free diet (GFCF). Gluten and Casein are common sources of allergens, and many children with ASD show dramatic improvement in as little as 2 weeks when these substances are removed from their daily consumption. One study conducted by the Autism Research Institute showed that a ratio of 35:1 children improved on the GFCF diet, and it is quickly becoming a widespread avenue of treatment for children with Autism around the world.
